This works pretty much on all platforms. You cannot use dropbox to create a new document, and edit it from a Web UI like google drive.

If you are using gmail, you should definitely start using google drive. Apart from just uploading documents from your local drive to the google drive, you can also edit document, create document directly from a web UI. One of the great things is that it has a very robust document sharing feature.
