Acer Rolls Out New Aspire Switch 10, Switch 10 E Hybrids

hardware maker Acer is switching things up on its 2-in-1 notebook. Well, sort of. The company is expanding its Aspire Switch 10 series with two new models. Acer just rolled out two 10.1-inch machines that tote Intel  Atom quad core processors and 2GB DDR3L memory. They also come with Office 365 pre-installed at no additional cost. The target audience: business users who want lightweight computing devices as well as students, and families.
At the same time, Acer is also refreshing its Aspire Switch 11 series, adding an 11.6-inch model to the mix with a hinge design that promises better ergonomics and more processing power . If you buy any of the new models, you also get a free Windows 10 upgrade.
Meet the Switch 10 E
The Microsoft  Windows 8.1-based Switch 10 E 2-in-1 (pictured on right) sports latch-free docking and offer four modes: a notebook for productivity applications; a tablet for surfing the Web, watching digital content and playing games; a display for presentations or engaging in video conferences; and a tent for maximizing space in small areas, like when you’re traveling on a plane.
The Switch 10 E comes with the Acer Snap Hinge 2, which promises smooth switching between the four modes. You can elevate the keyboard dock up to five degrees to find your typing comfort zone. The machine  comes with a 30Wh battery  that offers up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge, according to Acer.
The Switch 10 E is equipped with two 2-megapixel cameras -- one in the front and one in the back. At 10.31 by 7.09 by .43-inches, the device weighs about 1.39 pounds when it’s in tablet mode. Of course, it gets a little weightier when you attach the keyboard and hard drive. That takes it up to 2.82 pounds, but it’s still lighter than most laptops.
Display-wise, the Switch 10 E offers HD 1280 x 800 resolution and supports 10-finger multi-touch. The Acer VisionCare suite comes standard and includes Acer BlueLightShield. That technology works to reduce eye strain by decreasing blue light emissions. Meanwhile, Acer LumiFlex makes it easier to read the screen even in bright sunlight. You can opt for Switch Lock, Acer’s built-in HDD protection that keeps your data  safe if the machine is lost or stolen.
How Much Does It Cost?
Moving on to the Switch 10, it features a 1920 x 1200 resolution screen and offers a 2-megapixel front camera and 1080p video recording. Its 22Whr battery offers up to seven hours of video playback, Acer said.
It’s slightly smaller than the 10 E, measuring 10.29 by 6.97 by .35 inches and weighs 1.31 pounds. In notebook mode, it measures 10.29 by 6.97 by .93 inches and weighs 2.64 pounds with the keyboard dock and optional hard drive.
The Acer Aspire Switch 10 E will hit the market in mid-July with prices starting at $279. The Switch 10 will start at $399.

Disney Discovers How To 3D Print with Fabric

We have seen 3D printers produce objects from plastic and even metal. But the Magic Kingdom is living up to its name with the announcement that it has designed a 3D printer capable of printing with fabric. A group of researchers at Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon and Disney Research unveiled the invention in a paper last weekend. According to the researchers, the device is capable of forming precise, but soft and deformable 3D objects from layers of off-the-shelf fabric. Among the objects the research team produced were a fabric bunny, a Japanese doll, a touch sensor made of fabric, and a smartphone case with an embedded conductive fabric coil for wireless  power   reception. Touch-Sensitive, Wireless Power To form each object, the printer uses a single sheet of fabric to create each layer of the object. The printer cuts this sheet along the 2D contour of the layer using a laser cutter and then bonds it to previously printed layers using a heat sensitive adh...
